ulong ng Palad is the third drama series in ABS–CBN that actor Luis Alandy will be in with Kristine Hermosa. This is also the third time he'll be in a love triangle with the actress. But according to Luis, his roles have always been exciting and fresh in those love triangles he's been on television.
"Lagi akong panggulo but I enjoyed them all," he said.
The past soap operas they worked together were in "Pangako Sa Yo" and "Sana'y Wala Ng Wakas."
"Every roles I did was different like in ‘Pangako Sa Yo' I started as a bad character then became good. Here, viewers will fall in love with my character in the beginning," he described.
He doesn't also have qualms working again with Kristine in a love triangle especially since his was just an added character compared to the original "Gulong ng Palad" aired in the 70's. He explained that his inclusion was deemed visually as added spice for their audience. Completing the love triangle is actor TJ Trinidad.
Though he has been in three love triangles with the actress, he stressed that their onscreen relationships would not bloom into a love team of any sort. For him, it is something not feasible and he doesn't even wish for it. Luis' goal as an actor is to also go beyond a love triangle and into more mature and daring roles.
So what challenges him in his third love triangle with Kristine Hermosa?
"I'm doing a character role again. Nag –start ako ng mabait tapos naging bad sa bandang huli. Plus, dapat ang drama hindi going overboard so ang challenging is the sudden shift of my character. And that's a hard thing to do!"
The current "Gulong ng Palad" relives the once popular TV love story of Luisa and Carding of the 70's. Kristine Hermosa and TJ Trinidad play the respective lead roles. While the popular role of Peping (once played by Romnick Sarmienta) is now portrayed by Nash Aguas. Other actors in the remake of "Gulong ng Palad" are Joross Gamboa, Roxanne Guinoo, Hazel Ann Mendoza, Mhyco Aquino and Andrea Del Rosario.
Having a share of lead roles in movies and TV shows in the past, Luis looks past the stigma of just being a lead actor. He admits that times are different nowadays in show-business that tying oneself to just accepting lead roles would limit himself as an actor.
"I'm not thinking anymore if I'm a support or lead," said the ator. "I'm giving my best kahit support or maliit ang role. Lahat nilalagyan ko ng justice for my self–satisfaction at pagandahin talaga ang soap para makatulong din sa co-actors. I really study my roles so what comes out on TV is not the same as my previous acting in the past. So kailangang ibahin ang pagsalita, pag-arte, ang emotions, expressions hindi pare-pareho – yun ang challenge ko sa sarili ko!"
As an actor, Luis opined that everyone can relate to the soap opera "Gulong ng Palad." He pointed out not only to the love angle but what the whole drama series talks about especially its title.
"Everyone goes through that stage naman, yung gulong ng palad. That's why they say bilog ang mundo , meaning iikot at iikot yan and you're going to have your ups and downs. And when that happens, I just pray and keep my hopes up para hindi ako malaglag sa negative side."
He confessed that in his eight years in show- business, he experienced being at the bottom of the wheel. He remembered contemplating if he will land TV or movie projects because of competition becoming stiffer with the emergence of newer actors.
"That's the challenge I put on myself. I must find a way to present something new about my craft. I always ask myself kung anong change ang magagawa ko sa acting ko para people won't tire of me and so producers will still get me. That's why I really admire actors na nagtatagal," he remarked.
Compared to the past, Luis now sees himself as a mature actor who's comfortable with every role he undertakes.
"With the personality that I now have, I can do kontrabida roles which I was hesitant to do before. I also have more fun doing different roles para ma- explore yung range ko sa acting and I think yun ang makakatulong."
He gave Viva Films' digital movie project "Tuli" as an example of an unorhodox character he recently played. Also in the works for him is "MMS," another digital movie project co-starring Katrina Halili.
"I like digital films. Mabilis ang pace at mas crisp ang style ng movie. Hindi siya melodramtic type ng movie."
As an actor too, Luis makes it a conscious effort to further his knowledge on acting. Aside from workshops, he has found watching movies and reading books as very helpful.
"I study other actors in the movies they have made. I'm also reading a book now entitled ‘The Power of the Actor' which is about exploring one's self as an actor," he shared.
At the moment, Luis Alandy is considered single once again as his relationship with Desiree del Valle has taken a hibernating status.
Explained Luis: "We are still at the stage where we're still trying to see if it works out or hindi na . Sa amin kasi we are so mature and we respect each other so much na hindi muna pinaguusapan yan at career muna ...I can't say na kami pa kasi I'll be depriving her of her freedom. I just want her to be happy and I want her to get the best of everything."
