PEOPLE
In terms of blood lines, present-day Filipinos are a complex lot. Most Filipinos come from Malayo-Indonesian stock, with varying infusions of Chinese, Spanish, American and other European, South American and Asian blood. There are more than 100 ethnic groups in the country.
The majority of Filipinos, or Pinoys, as they call themselves,
are Christians. Christians predominate in Luzon and the Visayas and now make up the dominant population of
Mindanao. Ethnically these are the Tagalogs, Cebuanos, Ilocanos, Ilonggos, Bicolanos, Warays, Pampagueños and Pangasinenses.
Most Muslims make their home in Mindanao, and are concentrated in the Sulu archipelago, the Lanao provinces, Cotobato and Zamboanga del Norte. The Maranaos, Maguindanaos and Sanggils live on the main island while Yakans live on Basilan Island ; Taosugs are found in Jolo, Samals in Tawi-Tawi and adjacent islands, and the Jama
Mapun in Cagayan de Sulu. Filipino Muslims are the descendants of converts to Islam and in terms of lifestyle,
dress and manner are more closely related to Indonesians, Malaysians and Bruneians than to the Christian majority.
Filipinos are a freedom-loving people, having waged
two peaceful, bloodless revolutions against what were
perceived as corrupt regimes. The Philippines is a
vibrant democracy, as evidenced by 12 English national
newspapers, 7 national television stations, hundreds
of cable TV stations, and 2,000 radio stations.
Filipinos are a fun-loving people. Throughout the
islands, there are fiestas celebrated everyday and
foreign guests are always welcome to their homes.
