Understanding
a Basket
Although it has been said that a
basket is only understood through its use, it would seem that
this would give only a limited appreciation.
Rather, a true understanding could only come with a
deeper knowledge of the what and the why of a basket.
Since each and every basket is handmade, there will
certainly be individual variations and it
is up to the discriminating user of a basket to develop the
discernment of material and construction and to ascertain to
what degree of craftsmanship the two are integrated and how
they relate to the object’s final purpose.
The
material of a basket is surely a primary concern not only to
its maker but to its end-user as well.

Bamboo
House
“Tao Po” you call out, because
the door to a bamboo house is always open, and you don’t
want to come upon its occupants too suddenly.
There is little chance though
that you would. They
would hear your footsteps, or the hens would cackle to see
you, the dogs would bark.
The bamboo house lets all the sounds of the outside in.
You shake off your shoes as you get to the front steps,
because you don’t want to track in dirt.

The
Ingenious Filipino Boat
Skill
and creativity have seen the people of the Philippine
archipelago through many difficult situations. About a
thousand years ago, these were the very same talents they used
to succeed in a flourishing maritime trade with other Asian
countries. Their close affinity with the waters around them
help improve their seamanship and boatbuilding skill, placing
them on equal footing with their Asian neighbors.
