The
Barong Tagalog (which means dress of the Tagalog) has
evolved from Pre-hispanic native wear to the
"Philippines National
Wear" over the course of more than four centuries.
Through its
evolution, various factors have influenced the look and
meaning
of the Barong Tagalog. Traditionally worn by indios and
mestizos
during the Spanish Regime, it has now become the official
costume of the Philippine government officials,
professionals
and even some office workers. It has also earned its
recognition
on occasions like weddings, inaugurations and special
events.
With a variety of fabrics to choose from such as abaca,
jusi
and organza, the Barong Tagalog is finely embroidered from
the
provinces like Lumban, Laguna, Bulacan and Aklan. Because
of
its rich heritage, the Barong Tagalog enjoys its
distinction of
its own and has won international recognition and
acceptance.
